If Your Loved One Has Been Mistreated, You Deserve Answers

Placing a family member in a nursing home is a difficult, emotional decision. You trust the facility to provide high-quality care and protect your loved one’s well-being. Finding out that your loved one has been abused or neglected by the people you trusted is a devastating betrayal, especially if the nursing home has limited your visitation or failed to communicate with you about their condition.

Nursing homes don’t just have a moral obligation to care for your loved one properly — they’re legally required to. When they fail to uphold legal standards of care, they are responsible for the harm they cause. Our Los Angeles nursing home abuse lawyers are committed to fighting to preserve the rights of elder care residents and hold negligent facilities accountable.

Case Story: Severe Neglect Leads to $1.9 Million Verdict After Fall Death

In a recent case, Lanzone Morgan, LLP, represented the family of a woman who died after recurring, long-term care failures at a Los Angeles County nursing home. The resident was hospitalized eight times during her 11 months at the facility, during which she suffered repeated falls, malnutrition, and other unaddressed problems. It took eight falls and a broken back for staff to order a floor mat for her room, and the facility consistently failed to notify her doctor or family when she was injured.

The woman left the facility in June 2023 and died at home the next month, shortly after a final fall that robbed her of her ability to communicate. Committed to getting justice, our team pursued the case all the way to the courtroom, where a judge found the home had violated the resident’s legal rights 578 different times. Our attorneys secured a $1.9 million verdict for the victim’s family.

Learn More: How to Choose the Best Nursing Home Abuse Lawyer in Los Angeles

“Vulnerable victims are often cast aside by society. Despite having laws to deter this conduct, state and federal governments are unable to do enough to curb the increasing trend of abuse and neglect. When we litigate cases, our goal is to hold the perpetrators accountable for their wrongful conduct and obtain compensation for the vulnerable victims. There has been no greater reward than being the voice and advocate for the thousands of clients we have represented over the many years of practice and holding the perpetrators accountable.”

The Reality of Nursing Home Care Quality in Los Angeles

Families should be able to trust nursing homes to provide their loved ones with proper care. However, far too often, facilities are understaffed, underfunded, and poorly run. When facilities fail to meet acceptable care standards, residents are harmed.

The following are recent examples of poor care at Los Angeles-area nursing facilities, according to data reported by ProPublica:

Sunray Healthcare Center

Sunray Healthcare Center is currently designated as a Special Focus Facility, or SFF, by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, meaning it has a documented history of failing to comply with care quality standards and regulations. As of March, the facility had been on the SFF list for 17 months.

According to the data, Sunray has been fined $148,000 for 80 total deficiencies since late 2023. A January complaint report found the following three violations, two considered severe, leading to a $22,230 fine:

  • Failure to provide basic life support, including CPR, subject to physician orders and the resident’s advance directives
  • Failure to address accident hazards and provide adequate supervision to prevent accidents
  • Failure to develop and implement a complete care plan to meet a resident’s needs, with timetables and measurable actions

University Park Healthcare Center

University Park Healthcare Center was listed as an SFF candidate as recently as September 2025, but has reportedly been removed since. The facility has developed a poor reputation, including a one-star overall rating from Medicare.gov.

University Park has been cited for nursing home abuse as recently as July, where a complaint inspection reportedly found that it failed to prevent a resident with a history of violent behavior from harming others. Inspectors reported the following violations:

  • Failure to protect each resident from abuse
  • Failure to develop and implement policies and procedures to prevent abuse
  • Failure to timely report suspected abuse and report the results of any investigation to the proper authorities

Skyline Healthcare Center LA

Skyline Healthcare Center LA Has received more than $250,000 in fines since early 2024, one of the highest totals of any home in the city during that period, according to the data. Skyline is listed as a candidate for the SFF program as of March.

A May 2026 complaint inspection cited the following three violations:

  • Failure to develop and implement a complete care plan that meets all the resident’s needs, with timetables and actions that can be measured.
  • Failure to safeguard resident-identifiable information and/or maintain medical records on each resident that are in accordance with accepted professional standards.
  • Failure to ensure that a nursing home area is free from accident hazards and provides adequate supervision to prevent accidents.

How to Report Suspected Nursing Home Abuse in Los Angeles

If you’ve noticed signs that your loved one might be suffering from abuse or neglect, trust your gut and don’t hesitate to take action. You don’t need to have proof to report nursing home abuse, but your written observations and any evidence you can find may help.
