You Can Count on Our Pasadena Nursing Home Abuse Attorneys To Get Justice

We are one of the leading elder abuse law firms in the United States with over 75 years of combined experience and a proven track record of holding nursing homes accountable. Nursing home abuse is all we do, so we can offer a depth of experience you will not find at other firms.

We know how the long-term care industry works, and insurance companies defend cases. Our attorneys often see the same defendants again and again. They know we genuinely care about our clients, can win in court, and will not back down until we recover full compensation.

We advocate for every client with passion and precision. Our founders, Anthony Lanzone and James Morgan, started our firm with a vision to provide dedicated advocacy for vulnerable adults who too often feel that they must tolerate abuse or be deprived of care. With over 20 years of experience, James Morgan has dedicated his entire legal career to protecting the dignity of the elderly.

Nursing Home Abuse Is a Shocking Act that No One Sees Coming

Many families who come to us blame themselves for their loved ones’ injuries. They berate themselves for not recognizing the signs sooner or second-guess themselves for placing their loved one in a nursing home. Nothing is more heartbreaking than discovering your loved one experienced maltreatment in a nursing home. However, it is not your fault. Placing someone in a nursing home is often the only right thing to do.

It is easy to look back and think it should have been obvious, but you only have the benefit of hindsight now. Nursing homes go to great lengths to cover up abuse, and no one wants to believe their loved one is being abused.

When you come to Lanzone Morgan, LLP, everyone in our office will treat you and your family with empathy and compassion, as if you are our family. We never judge clients for not catching the abuse sooner.

Our clients can attest that once they contacted our firm, we worked swiftly to protect their loved one while providing compassionate advocacy. Here’s what some satisfied clients have said:

“My mother was neglected at a nursing home. I knew that they neglected her, but they denied it. I also knew that other people were neglected at that same nursing home. I found attorney James Morgan, and he helped me hold the nursing home responsible for their conduct. When we complained to the nursing home, they just ignored us. We did not get any response until attorney Morgan got on the case. My family and I thank attorney Morgan for doing a great job on our case and not letting the nursing home get away with neglecting our mother.”

J.B.

“My case with Lanzone Morgan, LLP, involved the death of my Mother that I believed would not have occurred if not for the harmful actions or the negligence of another party. I was unsure if I had any recourse and was uncertain of my next steps. During this emotionally grueling time, I spoke with Anthony Lanzone and was immediately impressed with his knowledge regarding my case. Whenever I called with questions, Mr. Lanzone listened to my input and quickly responded to my questions and concerns. Mr. Lanzone and the firm’s lawyers were highly experienced in this area of law. They always notified me before filing a motion and explained to me what was being filed. The fees were reasonable and explained up front. While it is very difficult to put a value on the life of a loved one and no amount of money could ever replace my Mother, the damages awarded eased my mind in that I have done something to hopefully prevent this from happening to someone else’s loved one. Lanzone and Morgan renewed my faith in the legal profession and represented me and my family with dignity and professionalism during a very difficult time.”

Types of Cases Our Pasadena Nursing Home Abuse Lawyers Handle

We handle a variety of nursing home abuse cases, including those involving the following:

  • Slips and falls
  • Broken bones
  • Subdural hematomas
  • Infections
  • Bedsores
  • Sexual assault
  • Malnutrition and dehydration
  • Poor hygiene care
  • Overmedication
  • Wandering and elopement
  • Physical abuse
  • Verbal abuse
  • Neglect
  • Wrongful death

If your loved one has experienced any of the above, you may have grounds to file a lawsuit against the facility and the responsible staff. Nursing home abuse should never happen. Even if it only happened once, your loved one deserves justice.

“And one of the main defenses in all our cases is that whatever happened to this person wasn't because of neglect. What happened to this person was because of their underlying disease processes and their age. This was just inevitable. That's not true. People aren't supposed to get bed sores. People aren't supposed to fall and hit their heads. Especially when the family's trying to do the right thing by entrusting the care and paying thousands of dollars so that this doesn't happen because they don't have the expertise to take care of them and keep them safe themselves.”

Pasadena Nursing Home Residents Have Rights

Nursing home residents retain their rights and liberties, including the right to control daily activities, make informed health care decisions, and receive visitors. Federal regulations provide that nursing home residents have the following rights:

  • To be treated with dignity and respect and to live in a home-like environment free of abuse, neglect, and discrimination
  • To receive care that promotes independence and quality of life, regardless of residents’ diagnosis, the severity of their condition, or payment sources
  • To be free of medically unnecessary physical and chemical restraints
  • To return to the facility after hospital admissions
  • To manage their money, keep possessions in their rooms, and have reasonable protection against theft

California Health and Safety Code Section 1599.1 requires nursing homes to hire “an adequate number of qualified personnel to carry out all of the functions of the facility.” It also requires that nursing homes ensure residents maintain good personal hygiene and receive care to prevent bedsores and incontinence.

If your loved one has suffered abuse or neglect in a nursing home, the facility has violated their rights. Our dedicated Pasadena elder abuse attorneys are dedicated to giving your loved one a voice and holding nursing homes accountable for violating their rights.

What Compensation Can Victims of Nursing Home Abuse Recover?

You may be entitled to recover economic and non-economic damages for nursing home abuse and neglect. Economic damages cover financial losses, such as medical expenses, lost wages, the cost of transferring to a new facility, and the value of lost assets in instances of financial abuse. Non-economic damages compensate for the less quantifiable impacts on the victim’s life, such as pain and suffering, emotional distress, loss of enjoyment of life, humiliation, and loss of function.

If your loved one has died from nursing home abuse or neglect, you may be eligible to recover wrongful death damages. These may include funeral expenses, your loved one’s medical expenses, your loved one’s pain and suffering, your mental grief and suffering, loss of companionship, loss of parental guidance, and similar losses.

In addition, you may be eligible to recover punitive damages if you can prove the defendants engaged in reckless, oppressive, malicious, or fraudulent conduct.

How Much Compensation Can I Receive?

Your damages will vary based on the severity of the injuries, the cost of medical care, the skill of your attorney, and other individual factors related to your unique case. We have a proven track record of holding nursing homes accountable.

Our attorneys have obtained substantial nursing home abuse verdicts and settlements, such as the following:

  • $3 million settlement for a nursing home resident who developed an infected coccyx bedsore
  • $2.3 million verdict on behalf of an 84-year-old woman who sustained permanent injuries from multiple falls in a nursing home
  • $1.3 million verdict for a client who broke her leg helping her mother shower after nursing home staff refused

Stories of Neglect and Abuse in Pasadena Nursing Homes

In 2020, regulators shut down Golden Cross Health Care Center on Fair Oaks Avenue over a lack of basic patient care and an inadequate response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Pasadena Fire Department evacuated 63 residents, according to a June 2020 CBS News report. At the time of the report, the facility had already had 104 confirmed cases of coronavirus, with eight fatalities. The report said that according to numbers from the city of Pasadena, 72 residents and 32 staff members had contracted the disease.

The Pasadena Star-News reported that state investigators found shocking conditions inside the facility, leading to its closure, including the following:

  • Old blood stains on the shirt of a dialysis patient, who told investigators he had not received a shower in two weeks
  • Inadequate staff training
  • Infection control violations
  • Malnourished, dehydrated residents
  • Residents lying in soiled and wet linens for hours
  • Bed sores, with one resident at risk of amputation
  • Staff being allowed to continue working after slapping a resident
  • Fruit flies in the kitchen

Inspection Results in Pasadena Nursing Homes

Inspectors have also found significant deficiencies in other Pasadena nursing homes. For example, Brighton Care Center has received 61 citations in the last three years, including one for failing to timely investigate and report suspected abuse, neglect, or theft to the appropriate authorities. The facility was also cited for inadequate colostomy care, inadequate respiratory care, failing to remove accident hazards, failing to prevent bedsores, and inadequate infection control.

Pasadena Care Center has received 80 health citations during the past three years, including a finding of immediate jeopardy, the most serious finding state inspectors encounter. On April 19, 2025, inspectors found that Brighton Care Center failed to prevent a resident from eloping after being out on pass and failed to follow appropriate procedures after it occurred. This facility has also received citations for failing to protect residents from abuse, not providing a clean, comfortable environment, and failing to provide appropriate dialysis care.

Camellia Gardens Care Center received 63 citations in the last three years, including citations for failing to provide appropriate IV fluid administration when needed and failing to ensure residents were free of medically unnecessary physical and chemical restraints.

What Is the Deadline for Filing a Nursing Home Abuse Lawsuit?

The statute of limitations for nursing home abuse claims is complex because individual circumstances affect it. If the case involves substandard medical care, it may be considered medical malpractice. The deadline for malpractice cases is one year from the discovery of the injury, but no more than three years from the incident.

If someone other than a health care provider has committed the abuse, the case may be governed by the standard personal injury statute of limitations, which is generally two years from the date of the incident. If the case involves financial abuse, the statute of limitations may be as long as four years.

Due to the complexity of the statutes of limitations, it’s important to consult a knowledgeable and experienced nursing home abuse attorney. If a case is filed too late, it will likely be dismissed, costing the plaintiff the opportunity to recover compensation. Protect your case by calling our elderly abuse attorneys in Pasadena as soon as possible when you suspect nursing home abuse or neglect.
