The Accidental Path to Elder Abuse Law

Anthony did not plan to become an elder abuse attorney. He stumbled into the field by accident, the way many lawyers end up in their practice areas. But something about elder abuse law grabbed him and would not let go. On the podcast, Anthony explained how he discovered this area of law and why, over the past 25 years, he has never looked back. He makes clear that this was not a calculated career move. It was a shift in perspective that changed everything about what he wanted to do with his legal skills.

Anthony also revealed that his stumbling into elder abuse law became the foundation for everything that followed. It shaped his priorities, influenced his decisions about how to build his firm, and continues to drive his work today.

Doing It the Hard Way from Day One

Anthony is direct about his early years throughout the discussion. He went to night law school. He had a newborn at home. He commuted 90 minutes each way. By any logical measure, this was unsustainable. Most people would have quit. Instead, he doubled down. Anthony also reflected on this period and what it taught him. He explains why he refused to take shortcuts even when shortcuts were available.

Anthony emphasized that this willingness to do things the hard way became a theme throughout his career. When he built his law firm, when he fought cases, the hard way was not just how he worked. It was who he was.

Why Easy Answers Are Not Enough

In Anthony’s office sits a unicorn. It represents something important about how he approaches his work and makes decisions. Anthony explained that it represents the refusal to accept easy answers. Easy answers exist everywhere in law. They are offered first. They are the most convenient. But they are rarely the ones that serve justice. Anthony believes that you cannot read the label of the jar you are inside of. The unicorn reminds him to look for the hard answers, to dig deeper, and to question whether the first solution offered is the right one.

This philosophy has become central to how he operates. It influences which cases he takes, how he investigates them, and how he challenges precedent when precedent fails vulnerable people.

The Day His Son Asked Why He Was Never Home

For years, Anthony chased success at the expense of his family. He was always at the office when he should have been at home. Then his son asked a simple question: “Why are you always gone?” Anthony then gave his two weeks notice that same day.

This decision became the turning point in his life. It forced him to reimagine what success meant and what mattered. It became the foundation for how he would eventually build his firm and why culture would matter so much to him.

Building a Law Firm Culture Built on Trust

After leaving his previous position, Anthony was determined to build something different. He wanted to create a firm where people actually wanted to work and where you could build a culture based on trust and empathy instead of competition and ego. On the podcast, Anthony talks about what he did to build this culture. He started by treating his team like family, brought in coaches to help him understand leadership better, focused on communication, and built systems that allowed people to do their best work without burning out.

Anthony shared that the results have been unusual. In three years, nobody has left the firm. This is rare in law, and especially rare in elder abuse law where cases are emotionally demanding. He is clear about why this matters: he wanted his team to have a different experience than he had early in his career, where they could have work they believed in without sacrificing the rest of their lives.

Decency as Your Inner Compass

Throughout the conversation, Anthony kept coming back to the same idea. Decency is the whole game. Not tactics. Not cleverness. Not shortcuts. He discusses the difference between being a lawyer who wins cases and being a person who does the right thing. For Anthony, these are connected. You cannot be an effective advocate for vulnerable people unless you are starting from a place of genuine decency.

Anthony has changed legal precedent, secured significant compensation for victims, and built a firm where people want to work. But what he keeps coming back to is this: he did it by refusing to compromise on decency. Being a decent person is not a nice add-on to your career. It is the foundation. It is what makes all the rest of it matter.
